Does the Crisis of BP Oil Spill Affecting Fish Oil Supplements?

0

There had been several oil spilling cases across the coast which took a heavy toll on aquatic life.  One such incidence is BP oils spill off the Louisiana coast has led to an argument whether it’s safe to eat marine sources of Omega 3.

Do these dangerous oils really affect fish oil supplements?

Well, it’s true as it happens basically in the ocean. Since it is subjected to contamination and our health hence, this needs utmost attention. However, many public drug and food agencies claim of not being involved in supplementation in the same manner as they are with other products available in the market.

Furthermore, Omega Protein may possibly be the largest fish oil producing agency in the US. They produce a wide range of fish oil products & supplements for numerous different brands and suppliers. The most frightening thing is that around 70% of their fish oil is procured from the gulf.  Hence OmegaProtein plans to sue the oil company for this massive damage. On the contrary, BP thinks the situation is under control and has promised to make good on claims of economic distress resulting from the spill.

So you have to be a smart customer as manufacturers would try selling out their products claiming all of them completely pure which may not be true. This leads to chaos so it is better to refer to the rating from the International Fish Oil Standards or IFOS before buying any omega product or supplement. IFOS helps control the highest standard for fish oils by passing batches of supplements through tests upon the request of the respective manufacturer.

3 points to remember while selecting any marine derived omega-3 supplement:

  • Confirm whether there is an indication of third-party testing in the product label
  • It should not smell bad
  • Since ultra-refined products should not freeze all at once; hence check the product’s freezability.

Government initiatives to protect consumers’ right

All leading names involved in the health regulations have joined hands to shut down impacted waters until the threat to marine life dissipates. It has been done so as they do not expect any dangerous product reaching the shelves and want to show the consumers that they are doing their best to control the food supply to protect general health.
